The Japanese government has stated, “We are taking a special and significant interest in the series of domestic movements in Korea,” in response to the news that Korean prosecutors have charged President Yoon Suk-yeol with being the leader of an insurrection.
During a press conference held this morning, Yoshimasa Hayashi, the Chief Cabinet Secretary and spokesperson for the Japanese government, was asked about Japan’s stance on President Yoon’s indictment. He responded, “We will refrain from commenting on the domestic affairs of another country,” while also emphasizing the importance of monitoring the developments.
He further stressed that “Korea and Japan are important neighboring countries that need to cooperate as partners in addressing various challenges in the international community,” and that “the importance of Korea-Japan relations remains unchanged in the current strategic environment.”
Additionally, he noted, “There are various movements in Korea’s domestic situation, but with this understanding, it is necessary for both countries to make efforts.” He added that Japan intends to engage in close communication with the Korean government, including regarding the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan.
