**Available on Amazon Prime from the 7th**
Director Bong Joon-ho’s new film, “Mickey 17,” his first in six years, will be available on digital platforms only a month after its North American release. US media reports that “Mickey 17” is expected to incur a loss of around $80 million due to its poor box office performance.
Released in North America on the 7th of last month, “Mickey 17” will be available on Amazon Prime from the 7th. Despite being highly anticipated as Bong’s first work since his Academy Award-winning film “Parasite” (2019), its cumulative revenue is expected to fall significantly short of the $300 million (approximately 440 billion won) break-even point. According to Box Office Mojo, as of the 5th, “Mickey 17” has grossed $122.37 million (approximately 180 billion won) globally. Variety, an American entertainment magazine, reported that the estimated loss for “Mickey 17” is between $75 million and $80 million.
“Mickey 17” also did not meet expectations domestically, failing to attract 3 million viewers by its 36th day in theaters as of the 5th. This performance is poor compared to recent hits like “Firefighter,” which crossed the 3 million mark by its 24th day despite controversy over the lead actor’s drinking incident and being labeled as a low-brow film. Additionally, while “Firefighter” had a seat occupancy rate of just 20% nationwide, “Mickey 17” had a rate approaching 60%, leading to more disappointment. A multiplex official admitted, “We did not expect the results to be this disappointing.”
It is anticipated that “Mickey 17” will surpass 3 million viewers by its 37th day on the 6th. Film market critic Kim Hyung-ho commented, “The film failed to attract fans over 40 who enjoyed Bong’s previous works. Warner Bros.’ marketing was not effective, and the lead actor Robert Pattinson’s low recognition in Korea also seemed to have an impact.”
