Takaichi: “Dokdo is historically and under international law Japanese territory”… Unable to hide ‘right-wing colors’ after all?

Takachi Sanae, the Prime Minister of Japan, has reiterated Japan’s claim over Dokdo, referred to as Takeshima in Japan, asserting that it is historically and legally Japanese territory. During a House of Representatives Budget Committee session on the 10th, Takachi addressed questions related to the so-called “Takeshima Day” event, mentioning that the government would respond appropriately concerning the attendance of high-ranking officials.

Since 2013, Japan has consistently sent lower-ranking government officials to Takeshima Day, a stance Takachi had previously challenged, suggesting that a minister should attend without concern. However, this time she avoided a definitive stance. When asked if the territorial claim was raised during talks with Korea, she reiterated Japan’s claim over Takeshima, stressing Japan’s basic position based on historical facts and international law.

Takachi, known for her hardline views on historical issues, Yasukuni Shrine visits, and the Dokdo issue, has faced criticism for her staunch positions. She has previously criticized former statements of apology for Japan’s past colonial rule and aggression and has called for firm actions over Dokdo, such as facility installations and local investigations. Recently, Japan refused refueling support for South Korea’s Black Eagles who were scheduled to participate in the Dubai Airshow, citing South Korean military activities near Dokdo. This decision was made just before a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Takachi last month.

Takachi’s continuing emphasis on Japan’s claim over Dokdo is drawing attention to its potential impact on future Korea-Japan defense and diplomatic exchanges.
