Botswana, located in southern Africa, has recently excavated the second largest diamond ore in history.
According to a statement by the Canadian mining company Lucara on the 21st local time, the company announced that they discovered a diamond ore weighing 2492 carats (498.4g) at the Karowe Mine located about 430 km north of the capital Gaborone.
This diamond ore is the largest ever mined in Botswana and the second largest in the world, following the Cullinan Diamond (3106 carats) found in South Africa in 1905.
Prior to the discovery of this diamond ore, the second largest diamond ore in the world was the Sewelô diamond (1758 carats) mined in the Karowe Mine in 2019.
Lucara is scheduled to host a public event to showcase the diamond ore on the afternoon of the 22nd with the attendance of Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Botswana is one of Africa’s leading diamond-producing countries, with diamond production accounting for one-third of the country’s GDP.
