Bloomberg has reported that an AI infrastructure project called “Stargate,” involving OpenAI and other tech companies, will make a significant debut by integrating thousands of Nvidia AI chips into its first data center. The project, which features the latest GB200 AI chips, will initially see an investment of around 6 trillion won. The first data center, set to be built in Abilene, Texas, will reportedly have a total of 64,000 GB200 chips by 2026. This initiative, led by OpenAI with partners like Oracle and SoftBank, aims to establish large-scale AI infrastructure including supercomputers and data centers.
The estimated cost of the GB200 chips ranges between $60,000 and $70,000 each, and if 64,000 units are indeed deployed, the cost could amount to approximately $4.48 billion (around 6.48 trillion won). According to sources, an initial 16,000 chips will be installed by this summer, with subsequent additions planned. Bloomberg noted that this would provide immense computing power for a single data center.
Additionally, OpenAI intends to expand the Stargate project to up to 10 sites, with potential locations including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Salt Lake City.
