In the villages of Varnavas near Athens, Greece, wildfires have broken out, with flames soaring and trees burning. According to Reuters and other news sources on the 11th local time, dozens of wildfires spread in the outskirts of Athens within 24 hours, leading residents to evacuate urgently. The fire department managed to suppress 33 out of the 40 fires that occurred during that time, with the remaining 7 still being extinguished. Authorities issued evacuation orders for around 30,000 residents in the affected areas, including the Marathon region. The wildfires spread rapidly with winds blowing at speeds of 80-90 km/h, covering the sky over Athens with black smoke. The flames were observed to reach heights of up to 25 meters. The scorching heat is also making firefighting efforts difficult, with temperatures in Greece expected to reach a high of 39 degrees Celsius on the 12th. At least 8 people have been hospitalized for respiratory issues due to the smoke from the wildfires. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis canceled his vacation and returned to Athens, while health authorities advised residents to stay indoors. Experts have analyzed that due to climate change, weather has become hotter and drier, leading to an increased frequency and intensity of wildfires.
