Following the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Ivy League’s prestigious Brown University has refused a federal government agreement that includes the prohibition of considering race and gender in admission policies, according to the New York Times.
The report states that Brown University’s President, Christina Paxson, expressed in a letter to the Trump administration that the agreement could potentially limit academic freedom and weaken the university’s autonomy in governance, leading to the decision to reject it.
Previously, the Trump administration had urged nine major U.S. universities, including Brown University, to sign an agreement that specified prohibitions on considering race or gender in admissions and hiring processes, limited international undergraduate enrollment to 15%, mandated the submission of standardized test scores or similar exams, and froze tuition fees for five years.
