‘(Washington=Yonhap News) Correspondent Joon-hyung Jo = As ceasefire negotiations in the Israel-Hamas war face difficulties, US President Joe Biden emphasized the need for early completion of negotiations in a phone discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the 21st local time.’
According to the White House, President Biden, who is on vacation in California after attending the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on the night of the 19th, discussed ceasefire negotiations in the Israel-Hamas war and efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East in a phone call with Netanyahu on that day.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running as the Democratic presidential candidate in November, also participated in the call, the White House reported.
The White House introduced that the two leaders discussed “current US efforts to support Israeli defense against threats from Iran and its proxies, including terrorist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthis.”
The White House further stated that “President Biden emphasized the urgency of concluding ceasefire and hostage release negotiations and discussed upcoming negotiations (ceasefire and hostage release) to remove remaining obstacles in Cairo.”
In a situation where the ceasefire of the Israel-Hamas war, which began in October last year, and the escalation issue, can affect the election sentiment, Biden’s and Harris’s communication with Netanyahu is interpreted as a move to coordinate and persuade strongly on ceasefire conditions.
Former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, blames last year’s surprise attack by Hamas against Israel, which marked the start of the Gaza war, on the incompetence of the Biden administration, and some Democratic supporters conducted a campaign to vote for ‘no candidate’ in this year’s primaries in opposition to the Biden administration’s support for Israel.
In this situation, President Biden, who has given up his reelection challenge, is evaluated to have a significant political necessity to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza war in terms of managing achievements in the diplomatic and security field during his tenure, and Vice President Harris in terms of easing international conflicts that could have a negative impact on the presidential challenge.
