Belgium to Join Movement Recognizing Palestine as a Sovereign State at Upcoming UN General Assembly on the 9th
Maxime Prévot, Belgium’s Foreign Minister, announced on social media platform X on the 2nd, local time, that “Belgium will recognize Palestine as a state at the UN meeting.”
He further added, “Belgium will join the signatories of the New York Declaration, which provides direction and recognizes the ‘two-state solution.'”
The two-state solution refers to the establishment of Israel and Palestine as separate states, based on the borders prior to Israel’s occupation of Palestine during the 1967 Six-Day War, allowing them to coexist peacefully.
Minister Prévot explained that the recognition of Palestine as a state is a “strong political and diplomatic statement condemning Israel’s colonial program and its expansionist intentions through military occupation.”
However, he indicated that the official administrative formalization of this recognition through a royal decree will be announced once Hamas has released all Israeli hostages and ceases to exercise control over Palestine.
