Belgium will join the movement to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state at the UN General Assembly scheduled for the 9th.
Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, announced in a post on social media that Belgium will recognize Palestine as a state during the UN meeting.
He further stated that Belgium will propose a direction towards the ‘two-state solution’ and join the signatories of the New York Declaration that acknowledges this approach.
The two-state solution involves the establishment of two independent states based on the borders prior to the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel occupied Palestine.
Previously, in July, 15 countries, including France and Saudi Arabia, held a ministerial meeting in New York, USA, to discuss the implementation of the two-state solution and issued a joint declaration.
As a result, the number of countries recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state has increased to 151.
