At least 14 people have died and over 200 have been injured in a strong earthquake in Vanuatu, South Pacific.

A report by Reuters stated that the death toll from the magnitude 7.3 earthquake near the island nation of Vanuatu in the South Pacific yesterday (17th) has increased to at least 14. Katie Greenwood, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Pacific delegation, wrote on social media platform X that “at least 200 people have been hospitalized with injuries and 14 people have been confirmed dead.”

Greenwood added that efforts are underway to rescue people trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings due to the earthquake, and that emergency supplies and drinking water are urgently needed.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) estimates that approximately 116,000 people, around one-third of Vanuatu’s entire population, have been affected by the earthquake, and the number of casualties is expected to rise over time.
