**[Herald Economy’s Reporter Kim Soo-han] On October 15th (local time), President Donald Trump reiterated that South Korea had agreed to pay $350 billion (approximately 497 trillion KRW) upfront as part of a trade agreement with the United States.**
During the press conference at the White House, President Trump listed the achievements of tariffs and stated, “Both Japan and Korea have signed. South Korea agreed to pay $350 billion upfront, while Japan agreed to $650 billion (approximately 924 trillion KRW).”
South Korea reached a broad trade agreement with the United States at the end of July but has yet to make a final signature due to differences over how to implement the $350 billion investment.
Additionally, Japan had actually agreed to invest $550 billion in the U.S., but Trump misstated this, leading to a $100 billion discrepancy.
This statement was made in the context of emphasizing the importance of tariffs for the U.S. economy and security ahead of a Supreme Court ruling on reciprocal tariffs imposed on various countries.
President Trump also stated last month on the 25th, “We are receiving $550 billion from Japan and $350 billion from Korea. This is upfront.”
