An anonymous gambler who predicted Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election and earned $48 million (approximately 67.2 billion KRW) is gaining attention.
On the 6th (local time), Bloomberg reported that an individual known as ‘Freddy 9999’, who holds four accounts on Polymarket, the world’s largest cryptocurrency-based betting site, is expected to earn a total of $48 million from betting on the U.S. presidential election.
This gambler is estimated to earn about $22 million from combining the earnings of four accounts in the most common betting category of predicting the next president.
Additionally, by correctly predicting the outcomes of other bets such as whether Trump would lead in total votes and win in Pennsylvania, the key battleground state, the gambler is expected to earn $26 million.
Two of this gambler’s four accounts ranked number one and two in the historical earnings on Polymarket.
As Freddy 9999 increased large bets leading up to the election, Polymarket launched an internal investigation due to concerns about potential market manipulation. The investigation revealed that Freddy 9999 is a French national with considerable experience in finance, who simply placed bets on Trump’s possible victory.
Polymarket’s election result prediction betting involves answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to questions about the likelihood of a candidate’s victory, choosing how much to bet, with corresponding dividends presented. The probability of each outcome is determined at specific points in time.
In comments posted on Polymarket, the jackpot winner described themselves as a European investor and statistician, proudly identifying as a “big-time gambler” willing to bet millions on Trump’s chances of winning.
