Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2: Comparing Two Performances in Two Months
With Marin Alsop conducting, the performance was ‘the pinnacle of lyricism’. Under the baton of Fabien Gabel, it embraced ‘moments of fervor’.
In the past two months, pianist Lim Yun-chan has performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 twice: once with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop in January and, more recently, with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra conducted by Fabien Gabel. Both performances showcased a remarkable contrast in interpretation and style.
In Vienna, under Alsop’s guidance, Lim’s performance was characterized by lyrical warmth. The meticulously clear notes flowed like a milky way cutting through the night sky, with Lim stepping back to highlight the flute’s sound, creating moments of gentle lyricism. In the second movement, tender piano notes sprinkled the night sky as the concerto transformed into a rhapsody of emotions in the third movement, drawing audiences deeply into his musical world.
In Tongyeong, the introduction was firm and weighty, setting a directional tone for the piece. Lim’s piano burst through the orchestra with a symphony of sounds, maintaining clarity and vibrance with each note. His performance here had a solidity and richness, with a dazzling touch from Lim’s right hand, offering a vivid and powerful contrast with the orchestra.
Despite both performances being of the same piece, Lim’s storytelling was utterly different each time, showcasing why Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is a perennial choice on the world stage.
Returning to South Korea, this time to Tongyeong—a city significant to Lim for its history of fostering his early success—his performances have stirred immense excitement. At the Tongyeong International Music Festival, Lim’s recital tickets sold out in under a minute, demonstrating his acclaim.
In Vienna, Lim’s interpretation under Alsop was about weaving delicacy with strong orchestral dynamics, whereas in Tongyeong, his deep connection with the orchestra brought forth a powerful resonance. Both performances highlighted Lim’s capacity for reinvention, each stage appearance unearthing unprecedented nuances.
As Lim continues his musical journey, his unique ability to transform familiar compositions like Rachmaninoff’s into something singular every time mesmerizes audiences, making each of his performances an eagerly awaited event.
