The police have launched an investigation into a YouTuber who recently circulated false and manipulated information on Japanese online platforms stating, “Mutilated corpses are frequently discovered in South Korea.”
The National Police Agency announced today (5th) that they are investigating YouTuber A, who claims that “37 bodies with only the lower half have been found in South Korea and there are 150 cases under confidential investigation.”
The police stated, “The dissemination of false and manipulated information not only creates public anxiety and social chaos but also severely damages the national image of our country. It could also negatively impact foreign visits and investments in Korea, and we consider it a serious act harmful to national interests.”
Accordingly, the police have quickly initiated an investigation into the YouTuber and are considering applying Article 47, Section 2 of the Basic Telecommunications Act for punishment after determining the facts.
According to relevant law, anyone who publicly disseminates false information through telecommunications facilities with the intent to harm others can face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
A police official emphasized, “We will continue to prevent social disorder caused by false and manipulated information” and “will respond swiftly and decisively to protect the public’s right to know.”
