Yoon Suk-yeol, the president, apologized during a press conference on his 2nd anniversary of inauguration on the 9th, saying, “I apologize for causing concerns to the people due to my wife’s imprudent behavior.” He also expressed a negative stance on the special prosecutor law.
President Yoon stated, “I will not mention my position on the announcement of starting an investigation by the prosecution, as it may have an impact.” He explained, “A special prosecutor is for cases where there are doubts about the competence or fairness of investigations by the established agencies like the prosecution or police. In the case of the Deutsche incident, during the previous administration, the prosecution, even summoning special investigation teams, intensely investigated me for about 2 and a half years.”
He continued, “I cannot help but wonder whether such investigations were conducted to observe or to conduct inadequately. I think it is a contradiction in itself. Suggesting doing more after doing enough may not align with the essence and purpose of a special prosecutor; in some aspects, it looks like a political offensive, a political act. I still have thoughts about whether it is to cover up the truth.”
