On the 9th (local time), OpenAI officially launched its video generation AI model, ‘Sora,’ which allows users to create videos using prompts. According to the example video commands released by OpenAI, users can create desired videos with minimal input.
OpenAI introduced ‘Sora’ in February and has now launched it 10 months later, after conducting tests with select users.
When ‘Sora’ was first unveiled in February, OpenAI stated that the AI could quickly create videos up to one minute long depicting various characters, specific types of actions, and complex scenes.
The AI model not only generates videos inspired by images but also offers features to extend existing videos or fill in missing frames.
OpenAI emphasized, “You can bring your imagination to life through text, images, or videos.”
During an online demonstration of ‘Sora,’ OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showcased features like ‘Blend,’ which combines two images to create a video.
‘Sora’ is available from today in most countries except for some, like those in Europe and the UK.
The release date for Europe and the UK has not been set, likely due to increasing regulations on tech companies in those regions.
OpenAI added that ‘Sora’ is included in ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro, meaning existing paid users can use the video AI model without any additional costs.
With the official launch of ‘Sora,’ competition among big tech companies over video AI models is expected to intensify.
Google previously released its enterprise-targeted video creation AI model ‘Veo,’ and Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company, unveiled ‘Movie Gen’ in October. In July, AI startup Runway launched its model ‘Gen-3 Alpha.’
Rohan Sahay, OpenAI’s product lead for Sora, stated, “Our goal is to maximize users’ creative expression while avoiding legal issues related to Sora.”
