Amid the scorching heatwave that has been prevailing for days, a typhoon has formed in the southern sea. There are predictions that this typhoon could become a variable in the prolonged heatwave.
Reporter Kim Jaehoon investigates how the typhoon could impact the heatwave.

Swirling rain clouds are spotted in southern Japan.
Tropical storms are gradually forming in the previously calm Northwest Pacific.
What’s unusual is that these storms are developing simultaneously within a large circulation, as if they are living together in one house.
This massive tropical cyclone circulation is called the “Monsun Zaire.”
One of the rain clouds that grew within the Monsun Zaire has developed into Typhoon No. 5, “Maria.”
Forecast currently suggests the typhoon is likely to move northward to the east of Japan.
It is being pushed away by the Tibetan high pressure system dominating the upper atmosphere of the Korean Peninsula and intensifying the heatwave.
Therefore, it is not easy for the typhoon to directly break the heatwave that is dominating on the Korean Peninsula by bringing rainstorms.
However, as it moves northward, significant fluctuations in the surrounding pressure systems are expected, and there is a possibility that the distorted air currents could create cracks in the robust heatwave structure.
[공상민 / Meteorological Administration Forecaster] “The uncertainty of the pressure systems around Korea remains high due to the strong upper high pressure and the intensity and phase of the tropical upheaval. Therefore, the analysis is that we need to observe whether the heatwave will continue or not.”
In 2018, Typhoon “Jongdari” brought heat and created the worst heatwave on record.
The Korea Meteorological Administration has stated that they are cautiously monitoring the movement and development of tropical storms, given the unusual paths taken by Typhoon “Jongdari.”
