The Korean Consumer Agency announced on the 16th that, upon inspecting the components of 40 sunscreen products, they found that two products exceeded the allowable 4% limit for “4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor” (4-MBC).
This substance is an organic UV filter that, if absorbed in large amounts within the body, can act as an endocrine disruptor and affect hormones.
The European Union plans to ban the use of 4-MBC in cosmetics starting next month and to prohibit the distribution of products containing 4-MBC from May next year.
The 4-MBC content in “Diomer Daily Sun Cream” and “Barangsori Bodamdodam Haeorum Shield” was confirmed to be 5%.
The responsible seller, Chocolate Cosmetics, has complied with the Consumer Agency’s corrective recommendations by discontinuing sales and disposing of stock, and has decided to refund the purchase price of sold products.
The Consumer Agency emphasized the immediate cessation of use of these products. Consumers are advised to contact the Chocolate Cosmetics customer service center for refunds and to consult the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center (☎1372) or Consumer24 if any issues arise.
