Kim, who moved to the U.S. at the age of 5 and is currently pursuing a PhD at Texas A&M University, was arrested and detained by Customs and Border Protection while returning from attending his brother’s wedding in Korea last month. The family believes that his previous charge in 2011 for marijuana possession, for which he received community service, might be an issue. In the letter, Kim’s mother acknowledged her son’s past mistake but argued there is no reason for such harsh treatment, and requested the Korean government to ask the U.S. government for a prompt release.’,
