Trump: “May Request Ownership of US Military Base Land in South Korea”

“U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that he may request the transfer of ownership of the land used by the United States Forces Korea bases, which is currently leased in South Korea, to the United States.”

“During a meeting with President Lee Jae-myung at the White House on the 25th local time, President Trump was asked if he was considering reducing US troops in South Korea. He responded, ‘I don’t want to talk about that now,’ adding, ‘because we are friends.'”

“President Trump further explained that the current US Forces Korea sites are leased rather than owned by the US military. He stated, ‘One of the things I would like to do is ask the Korean side to give us the ownership of the land we have large bases on.'”

“He emphasized, ‘We have spent a tremendous amount of money building bases, and although Korea has contributed, I want that,’ adding, ‘We can abolish lease agreements and secure ownership of the land where we have massive troops stationed.'”
