The Supreme Court to Deliver Verdict on ‘Gwangju Hakdong Collapse’ Appeal Today

Four years ago, the collapse disaster in Hakdong, Gwangju, which resulted in the deaths of nine people and injuries to eight, will have its criminal responsibility verdict delivered by the Supreme Court today (the 14th).

The Supreme Court’s First Division will announce its verdict at 10:10 AM today regarding the collapse accident that occurred as part of the Hakdong redevelopment project in Dong-gu, Gwangju.

The appeals hearing date is set for three on-site supervisors indicted on charges including occupational negligence resulting in death.

Previously, these individuals received sentences of up to three years and six months during the appeal trial in February this year for proceeding with demolition work without conducting any on-site safety inspections.

The Hakdong collapse disaster occurred in June 2021 at the demolition site in Gwangju’s Hakdong 4th district, where a building of five above-ground and one below-ground floor collapsed, resulting in 17 casualties.
