The Democratic Party of Korea plans to push for a vote on the impeachment proposal against three prosecutors, including Choi Jae-hee, the Chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection, and Lee Chang-soo, the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, at the National Assembly’s plenary session today (the 5th).
In a meeting with reporters after the plenary session where President Yoon Seok-yeol’s impeachment proposal was reported, Democratic Party spokesperson Noh Jong-myeon stated this move.
The Democratic Party initially decided to focus its efforts on the resignation of President Yoon, temporarily suspending the impeachment of Chairman Choi and the prosecutors. However, they made a swift decision when the People Power Party declared opposition to President Yoon’s impeachment as its party line.
Spokesperson Noh mentioned that after observing the ruling party’s stance, the majority opinion in the party members’ meeting was that “we need to push forward with everything (including the impeachment of the Chairman and others).”
Previously, the Democratic Party had proposed an impeachment motion against Chairman Choi Jae-hee, citing an inadequate audit of the relocation of the presidential office and residence. Additionally, they proposed impeachment motions against Lee Chang-soo, Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, Cho Sang-won, Deputy Chief Prosecutor, and Choi Jae-hoon, Head of the Anti-Corruption Division 2. This was due to the prosecutors’ failure to adequately investigate the allegations of Kim Keon-hee’s involvement in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case following a decision not to indict her.
