The People Power Party Announces Space and Science Technology Pledge: “R&D Investment to Increase by 5% of National Budget Expenditure”

The People Power Party has announced a “Space and Science Technology Pledge” that includes strengthening investment and support to improve the research environment for space and science technologies.

The party’s Policy Headquarters released a statement today (14th) highlighting their commitment to making life more convenient for the public through support for space and science professionals, aiming to become one of the world’s top five science and technology powerhouses.

First, they explained plans to invest over 5% of the national budget in R&D and amend the “Basic Science and Technology Law” to improve the status, treatment, and rights of science and technology professionals.

To support this, they plan to establish the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Science and Technology and introduce a special envoy for science who can collaborate with the scientific communities of major countries worldwide.

Additionally, the party plans to expand the national strategic technology R&D budget to 10 trillion won within five years and expedite research initiation by abolishing existing R&D feasibility assessments, aiming to shorten the preliminary period by up to three years.

They also outlined measures to strengthen support for science and engineering students.

Specific measures include expanding the budget for graduate students’ research stipends to a maximum of 120 billion won, providing scholarships to 10,000 outstanding master’s and doctoral students, enhancing postdoctoral fellowship support, and increasing opportunities for training at prestigious institutions both domestically and abroad.

Furthermore, the plans include improving compensation for job inventions, enhancing incentives for distinguished researchers, revitalizing the national special researcher system, and supporting female and senior researchers.

In the space sector, they aim to support related projects by expanding the space fund targeting 100 billion won and designate specialized zones like Gyeongnam, Daejeon, and Jeonnam to strengthen manufacturing capabilities and talent development.

Candidate Kim Moon-soo plans to visit the Sacheon Space and Aviation Administration in Gyeongnam today to listen to voices from the field.
