The Future of the US Democratic Party: This Man Faces Off Against Trump Over LA Protests

**Next US Presidential Candidate Mentioned Governor Newsom**

**Protests Continue for Fourth Day… 56 Arrested Over Three Days**
**700 Marines Deployed to ‘Protect Federal Personnel and Property’**

The conflict between former President Donald Trump and Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom is escalating amid intensified protest over the Trump administration’s policies on illegal immigration and deportation in Los Angeles. Newsom, who is one of the few potential Democratic leaders after the party’s struggles following last year’s election defeat, has made political waves by opposing Trump’s actions, including an order to deploy the National Guard. On June 9, Newsom filed a lawsuit against this order. Meanwhile, Trump remains firm as the protests challenge a core aspect of his agenda on illegal immigration.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Newsom criticized the escalating protests under the National Guard’s deployment, attributing the situation to Trump’s intentions. He argued that Trump’s order to deploy the National Guard federally was illegal and not applicable to California. Control over the National Guard generally rests with the state governor unless under significant circumstances like a national rebellion. Trump had declared the protests as riots and instructed the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops, with 300 currently stationed in major protest areas. This move marks the first presidential deployment without a governor’s consent since 1965 under Lyndon Johnson.

Trump told reporters his support for Newsom’s arrest was related to interfering with illegal immigration enforcement. Despite expressing personal fondness for Newsom, Trump criticized him for incompetence. Trump previously mocked Newsom during wildfires earlier this year, suggesting he bore responsibility. Trump defended the National Guard deployment on his social media, ‘Truth Social,’ and argued it prevented complete devastation in LA.

The New York Times has reported that Trump sees political opportunity amid the conflict, viewing the protests as pivotal for his agenda against illegal immigration. Meanwhile, U.S. Northern Command announced approximately 700 Marines had been deployed to support the already positioned National Guard troops.

Newsom might be positioning himself as a Democratic symbol against Trump, with potential aspirations for the 2028 presidential race. His actions include opposing the participation of transgender women in women’s sports and engaging with former Trump advisor Steve Bannon in joint podcasts. Newsom’s former spouse, Kimberly Guilfoyle, is currently engaged to Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. Newsom has accused Trump of attempting to violate the Constitution through fear and insecurity.

The protests in LA, which began over the deportation of illegal immigrants, continued on June 9 for the fourth day. LA Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the observed violence as repulsive, and noted its intensification since the beginning of the protests. On just one day, 27 arrests were made, with incidents involving Molotov cocktails and vehicular assaults on officers. NBC reported a total of 56 arrests over the past three days, with protests spreading to other major cities such as San Francisco and Chicago.
