The funeral ceremony for the late former lawmaker Jang Je-won took place, with 250 family members and others bidding farewell for the last time.

The funeral of former National Assembly member Jang Je-won was held on the 4th at the funeral hall of Haeundae Baik Hospital in Haeundae-gu, Busan.

Before the funeral, a service was attended by over 250 people, including Jang’s son Yong-jun (rapper name Noel), his wife, his older brother Jang Je-guk, the president of Dongseo University, and acquaintances, as they gathered to pay their last respects.

Kim Dae-sik, a fellow politician, stayed by the deceased during the funeral period and attended the service to express his condolences.

Due to the imminent Constitutional Court ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol, no other ruling party figures attended except for lawmakers Lee Seong-kwon and Cho Seung-hwan.

The deceased’s remains were cremated at Yeongnak Park and will be interred at Siloam Park Cemetery in Busan.

Jang Je-won served as a member of the 18th, 20th, and 21st National Assembly. After the presidential election in 2022, he served as the chief secretary to President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, actively participating as a core member of his inner circle.

However, facing increasing calls for innovation within the party towards the end of 2023, he announced on December 12th that he would not run in the general election and stepped back from political frontline activities.

Recently, allegations had surfaced accusing him of committing sexual violence against a secretary during his tenure as a vice president of a university in Busan in 2015, leading to a police investigation.

Jang was found deceased in an officetel in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, on the evening of March 31st.
