The Democratic Party: “From now on, the Trial Suspension Act will be promoted as the ‘National Stability Act.'”

“The First Trial Verdict for Daejang-dong Confirms Former President’s ‘Fabricated Charges’ of Breach of Trust”

The Democratic Party of Korea suggested on the 2nd that it is time to focus on the public discussion of judicial reform, indicating that discussing the so-called ‘Trial Suspension Law’ has become an unavoidable realistic issue. They noted the possibility of addressing this law within the party this month.

At a press conference in the National Assembly, Spokesperson Park Soo-hyun stated, “From now on, the Democratic Party will refer to the Trial Suspension Law as the ‘National Stability Law,’ ‘National Protection Law,’ or ‘Constitution Article 84 Defense Law.’”

Spokesperson Park explained, “Thus far, the argument for addressing the National Stability Law defensively emerged naturally at an individual level among Democratic Party lawmakers in response to the People Power Party’s demand to resume five major trials against the former president. However, as the court has made it clear that the breach of trust charges against the former president during the Daejang-dong gang trial were unreasonably fabricated, it has now become a practical issue at the leadership level.”

He further mentioned that there is a possibility of elevating the discussion of the National Stability Law (Trial Suspension Law) to the leadership level, with the possibility of it being addressed during the regular National Assembly session at the end of the month.

Previously, the Democratic Party planned to process the Trial Suspension Law (a criminal procedure law amendment) in a plenary session on June 12th after it was passed by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee under their initiative. However, processing was postponed just before the plenary session due to the controversy over the special legislation for the former president.

Spokesperson Park reiterated, “As the People Power Party stokes the fire by urging the commencement of five major trials against the former president, the Democratic Party cannot help but get heated. Though it’s a basic stance, I clearly state that there is a possibility of prioritizing the distortion of law and the National Stability Law, which have already passed the Judiciary Committee and are waiting for the plenary session.”

He added, “I urge the People Power Party to immediately stop criticizing the Democratic Party for taking steps to eliminate the breach of trust charge trial against the former president through this law. Has Leader Jang forgotten his passionate statements with Representative Jung Cheong-rae and the president about improving the breach of trust charge system?”
