Starting in March with ‘heavy snow’… 40 cm in the Gangwon mountains and 5 cm in inland areas

[Anchor] After a series of mild spring weather, a significant amount of snow has been forecasted right as March begins.

Up to 40 cm of heavy snow is expected to fall in the mountainous areas of Gangwon, and up to 5 cm of snow is anticipated in some inland areas such as Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and Yeongnam.

This report is by Kim Min-kyung.

[Reporter] The spring that seemed so close is only taking a brief pause, as with the start of March, the season appears to be reverting back to winter.

The influence of a low-pressure system passing south of Korea will bring snow or rain nationwide, and with the addition of easterly winds, significant snowfall is expected in the Yeongdong region.

[Lee Chang-jae / Meteorological Office Forecast Analyst: Snowfall is expected primarily in the central inland areas with low temperatures, including Gangwon, northern Gyeongbuk, and southern mountainous areas. In Gangwon, heavy snow is expected to be concentrated from Monday morning on the 2nd until early morning on Tuesday, the 3rd.]

The Meteorological Office predicts that by tomorrow, the mountainous regions in Gangwon could see over 40 cm of heavy snow.

Up to 5 cm of snow is also expected in eastern Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, and various parts of Yeongnam, while Seoul may see less than 1 cm.

Especially in mountainous areas, heavy snow may fall at a rate of 1 to as much as 5 cm per hour, with a possibility of a heavy snow warning being issued.

However, being a transitional period into spring, the Meteorological Office explains that a slight temperature change of 1–2 degrees could mean the difference between rain and snow.

[Woo Jin-kyu / Meteorological Office Communicator & YTN Disaster Advisory Committee: Temperature is crucial, so even in areas forecasted for significant snowfall, there could be large regional variations, with areas of low and heavy snowfall crossing each other…]

Jeju Island, within the influence of the low pressure, is expected to experience heavy rain coupled with strong winds, and high waves are anticipated at sea.

With both snow and temperatures dropping nationwide, the weather will become rather chilly, returning to average levels.

Preparations are needed to prevent damage from the winter weather that has reappeared at the threshold of spring.
