South Korea wins 5 gold and 3 silver medals at the Asian Physics Olympiad; student Lee Hyuk-joon takes overall top position.

The South Korean team at the Asian Physics Olympiad, where young talents in the field of physics from Asia compete, achieved awards across the board.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 16th that at the 25th Asian Physics Olympiad held from the 4th to the 12th in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, all eight members of the South Korean team won medals, securing five golds and three silvers.

A total of 250 participants from 31 Asian countries competed in this year’s event.

The South Korean team members who won gold medals include Lee Yeon-ho (Sophomore at Seoul Science High School), Lee Hyuk-joon, Jang Geun-young, Han Ji-hyung (Junior at Seoul Science High School), and Choi Jung-min (Junior at Gyeonggi Science High School). Silver medals were awarded to Lee Gwon-heon, Lee Sin-hyeok (Sophomore at Seoul Science High School), and Chae Woo-hyun (Junior at Gyeonggi Science High School).

Notably, Lee Hyuk-joon, who won a gold medal, achieved the highest overall score among the participants, excelling in the experimental exam.

The competition comprised three theoretical problems and one experimental problem, with theoretical questions on topics such as the precession of the Earth’s rotational axis, spin waves and phase transitions, and the thermodynamics of atmospheric phenomena. The experimental problem focused on the principles of induction cooktops.

Meanwhile, the next Asian Physics Olympiad is scheduled to be held in Busan from May 17 to 25 next year.
