People Power Party Reaffirms ‘No Participation’ Policy for National Appointment Ceremony
In a meeting held at the central party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 14th, Song Eon-seok, the interim leader and floor leader of the People Power Party, criticized the upcoming ‘National Appointment Ceremony,’ which coincides with the inauguration ceremony of President Lee Jae-myung on Liberation Day. He stated, “After only two months in office, the Republic of Korea is on a deteriorating path.” He described the decision to hold what he sees as a “self-congratulatory coronation ceremony” under such circumstances as truly pathetic.
Chairman Song said during the emergency response committee meeting, “President Lee already held an inauguration ceremony at the National Assembly on June 4th, and now, he plans to hold another ceremony, dubbed the ‘National Appointment Ceremony,’ tomorrow.” He argued that conducting such a self-congratulatory event on a day meant to celebrate liberation and commemorate the sacrifices of patriots is incomprehensible.
He questioned whether the current situation in the country warrants what he describes as a “victory celebration,” and he critiqued the Lee administration for alleged mishandling of issues such as trade negotiations, its anti-business legislation, and the involvement of figures within the government in financial crimes, known as the ‘Yi Chun-seok Gate,’ as well as the pardons of former lawmakers Cho Kuk and Yun Mi-hyang.
Furthermore, he expressed concern over potential heavy rainfall and the risks of flooding and landslides in regions such as western Seoul. He criticized the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for focusing on the president’s ceremony preparations instead of prioritizing public safety during these natural threats.
Chairman Song directed his remarks at President Lee, stating, “This is not the time to focus on power displays. All efforts should be devoted to protecting the lives and safety of the people and addressing public sentiment.” He cautioned President Lee and the Democratic Party of Korea to remember that as their celebratory songs grow louder, so too does the public’s resentment and anger.
Song Eon-seok and all members of the People Power Party have declared their intent not to participate in tomorrow’s National Appointment Ceremony.
