Seoul Ballet Company takes their first step dancing ‘Love’

In August 23-25, the premier choreographer Ju Jaeman’s dance ‘Dream of a Midsummer Night’ will be held at Sejong Cultural Center. This marks the official establishment of the Seoul Ballet, Korea’s first public contemporary ballet troupe, with Ju Jaeman’s choreography. Inspired by Shakespeare, the production focuses on the theme of ‘love’ and consists of two acts and seven scenes. The performance will take place at the Sejong Cultural Center’s main theater from August 23-28. Ju Jaeman, who is in charge of overall direction, stated during the production presentation on the 22nd, “I will present mysterious, beautiful, and astonishing scenes. The power of dance art is to make the audience forget they are watching something on a big stage.” The show will feature a large set of 7 meters in height, and over 150 unique costumes will be showcased.

Ju Jaeman has previously presented innovative works in the United States with New York Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet. In this production, he explores a fantastical world through the mischievous fairy character “Puck” from the original work. Ju Jaeman explained, “I reinterpreted the mischievous fairy Puck as a symbolic character resembling an aged ‘sage’ after millions of years.”
