**Samsung SDI Begins Production of Next-Generation Cylindrical Batteries**
Samsung SDI has commenced mass production of the 46-pi (diameter 46mm) battery, known as a ‘next-generation cylindrical battery.’ This marks the first such production among domestic battery manufacturers. Having already secured international clients, the company plans to expand its supply channels.
Recently, on the 31st, Samsung SDI announced a shipment ceremony for the 4695 (diameter 46mm, height 95mm) battery module at its Vietnamese subsidiary. The company manufactures the 4695 battery cells at its Cheonan plant in Korea, which are then assembled into modules at the Vietnam unit. Subsequently, the first batch of these batteries will be supplied to a U.S. customer for use in micromobility devices (electric micro-mobility vehicles).
Samsung SDI advanced the mass production of the 46-pi battery by more than a year ahead of the initial schedule, made possible by its differentiated technological prowess and quality capabilities. According to the company, this is the result of applying high-capacity high-nickel NCA (nickel, cobalt, aluminum) cathodes and their proprietary SCN (silicon carbon composite) anodes in the 46-pi battery.
Through these advancements, the battery swelling phenomenon is reduced while energy density is increased. The 46-pi battery boasts more than six times the energy capacity of the existing 21700 (diameter 21mm, height 70mm) cylindrical battery. It’s not just the energy density that’s improved; the battery’s lifespan and safety have also been enhanced. Additionally, Samsung SDI has applied ‘tabless technology’—creating multiple tabs at the ends of the electrodes to expand the current paths—reducing the internal resistance by approximately 90% and increasing output.
With this initial supply, the company hopes the 46-pi battery will find broader applications in electric vehicles. A Samsung SDI representative stated, “We aim to secure market leadership with our differentiated manufacturing competitiveness and quality.”
