Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on the 21st that it received the “Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award” at the “60th Invention Day” ceremony, organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association under the supervision of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, marking a first in the insurance industry.

The “Invention Day” ceremony commemorates May 19, 1441, when the world’s first rain gauge was invented, and honors individuals who have contributed to the promotion of inventions in Korea. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, being the first in the insurance industry to receive this award, was recognized for its efforts in conducting intellectual property rights enhancement projects and inventing new technologies closely linked to public safety and health, contributing to the creation of a social safety net.

To improve employees’ awareness of intellectual property rights, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance organized the “Patent Idea Contest” with awards for outstanding ideas and conducted insightful lectures through the “IP Festival.” Additionally, it published the patent magazine “YEP! (Your Extraordinary Patent!)” to deliver news about patents in an engaging manner, leading efforts to improve awareness of intellectual property rights.

Last year, the company also established an internal patent management system, creating an environment where employees can freely propose ideas at any time. They systematically manage accumulated know-how and data by converting it into a database.

Through these efforts, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance achieved the highest number of patent applications and registrations among insurance companies last year, enhancing its core business competitiveness with patents in areas such as “insurance underwriting automation” and “insurance fraud detection.”

Kim Jong-joo, Patent Attorney at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance’s Legal Support Part, stated, “We explored ways to make intellectual property rights accessible and straightforward for employees in the unfamiliar insurance industry, and these efforts led to the meaningful result of the ‘Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award.'” He added, “We will continue to strive to enhance our business competitiveness based on intellectual property rights and to secure patents globally to strengthen our position in the international market.”
