Samsung Electronics signs Korea’s first ‘Household Energy Code of Conduct’ with the EU… “Laying the foundation for expanded cooperation”

Samsung Electronics announced on the 14th that it is the first South Korean company to sign the European Union’s Energy Smart Appliances Code of Conduct (CoC). The EU CoC is a voluntary agreement program led by the Joint Research Centre under the European Commission, encouraging appliance manufacturers to develop and promote high-efficiency smart appliances. Its goal is to enhance the connection between smart appliances and power management systems, thereby enabling a more flexible response to energy demand by distributing the load during peak times.

Through this agreement, Samsung Electronics has laid the foundation to expand energy cooperation with power companies across Europe. The EU encourages power companies to pursue energy-saving collaborations with appliance manufacturers that have signed the CoC. Samsung Electronics has partnered with major European energy companies like British Gas and Coolblue in the Netherlands, offering reduced electricity bills and plans to further expand its energy collaboration.

Samsung’s integrated washer-dryer, washing machines, and dishwashers meet the EU CoC standards and are registered as Energy Smart Appliances (ESA) in the ‘EU energy label registration system’ (EPREL). These products are equipped with a ‘custom reservation’ feature that suggests usage during times of lower energy demand.

The EU discloses information about high-efficiency home appliances through EPREL. Since March, products that optimize energy usage when integrated with the power grid have been classified as ‘Energy Smart Appliances’ for easy search and verification. Some European countries are already providing subsidies or tax benefits for high-efficiency, energy-saving smart appliances registered in EPREL.

Samsung is strengthening its AI appliance competitiveness by launching various energy-efficient models in the European market. Last month, they introduced the “Bespoke AI Dishwasher,” which uses up to 20% less energy than the top A-rated products in Europe. In June, they plan to release a “Bespoke AI Washing Machine” that reduces energy consumption by up to 65% compared to the highest A-rated energy efficiency products. These appliances feature a ‘custom reservation’ option and provide users with a graphical representation of energy usage after each cycle, assisting in systematic energy management. The AI Save Mode can reduce energy consumption by up to 15% for refrigerators, 70% for washing machines, and 30% for air conditioners.

Yang Hye-sun, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances Division, stated, “This signing demonstrates Samsung Electronics’ competitive edge in high-efficiency technology and our efforts to expand the energy-saving ecosystem,” and expressed intentions to further expand energy cooperation with various power companies in Europe.
