**Samsung and Google’s XR Collaboration: “Project Infinity” and Android XR Launch**
Samsung and Google are set to enter the extended reality (XR) market, challenging big names like Meta and Apple. The two tech giants have developed an XR headset codenamed “Project Infinity,” which will be released next year. This move comes almost a year after Apple unveiled its mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, in February.
The XR market, though currently niche, might see a shift towards mainstream adoption as Samsung and Google bring their expertise to the arena. Their collaboration is not new, as the companies have been trusted partners in the smartphone industry for years, with Samsung providing hardware and Google offering software.
Unveiled at a recent event in New York, the “Android XR” operating system will power their upcoming XR devices. XR, encompassing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality, provides immersive experiences in virtual spaces. The anticipated headset is expected to feature advanced technology, aiming to offer seamless integration between real and virtual worlds without needing other devices.
The collaboration plans to release a headset first, highlighting the technical prowess of the Project Infinity device, suggesting a potential reveal during Samsung’s event in January. Unlike the Vision Pro, which faced criticism for its weight and high cost, Project Infinity is suggested to be lighter with improved wearability and more affordable pricing.
Entering as a latecomer might benefit Samsung and Google, allowing them to address the shortcomings of existing devices by Meta and Apple. Once launched, Project Infinity is expected to create a triad of competition in the XR market, alongside Meta and Apple. Samsung and Google have indicated they will continue to develop Android XR-based products, potentially revitalizing the mixed reality market.
