Saemaeul Geumgo Delegate Caught on Allegations of Unlawful Election Campaigning

Gyeongnam Election Commission, Filed Complaint to Police … Delegate Conducted Election Campaign for Incumbent Chairman at Hiking Club Meeting

The first nationwide simultaneous election for Saemaeul Credit Union Chairmen is taking place, and a delegate has been caught illegally campaigning for an incumbent chairman seeking candidacy using methods not specified under the commissioned election law.

On the 24th, the Gyeongsangnam-do Election Commission announced that it had filed a complaint against the delegate, Mr. K, to the police.

According to the commissioned election law (Article 24, Subject·Period·Method of Election Campaign), it is stipulated that no one can conduct election campaigning by any means except for a candidate, the candidate’s spouse, direct ascendants or descendants, or one designated member from the association or organization who is neither an officer nor an employee of the relevant entrusted organization.

However, delegate Mr. K, who is not allowed to campaign, is accused of using a loudspeaker inside a tour bus during a hiking club meeting attended by credit union members before the election campaign period to conduct an election campaign for the incumbent chairman seeking candidacy.

A spokesperson from the Gyeongnam Election Commission stated, “Illegal election campaigns conducted by those who are not permitted to campaign can significantly impact the election in elections with a small voter base, such as the credit union chairman election, and violate the fairness of elections, which is prohibited under the commissioned election law.”
