Russia avoided commenting on the possibility of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visiting Russia in May, stating that they are “not prepared to make any statements” on the matter.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, responded to questions during a briefing regarding Kim’s potential attendance at the 80th anniversary parade for Russia’s Victory Day on May 9.
Peskov noted that Kim Jong-un has a valid invitation to visit Russia and that the schedule would be agreed upon through diplomatic channels.
Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Kim to visit Moscow during Putin’s visit to North Korea in June last year.
Regarding this, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that on the 15th, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, during his visit to North Korea, discussed high-level and top-level political contacts with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui and others.
On the 21st, Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, directly met with Kim in North Korea and delivered a message from President Putin, raising the possibility that the timing for a Russia-North Korea summit had been coordinated.
