As the possibility of disciplining the chief prosecutors who made collective statements regarding the Daejang-dong appeal withdrawal incident is being reviewed, senior prosecutors are stepping up to tender their resignations.
First, it has been confirmed that Park Jae-eok, the chief prosecutor of the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office, expressed his intention to resign to the Ministry of Justice today (the 17th) in the afternoon.
This comes exactly one week after 18 chief prosecutors, including Chief Prosecutor Park, posted a statement titled “We request additional explanations from the Acting Prosecutor General” on the internal prosecutor network.
At that time, the chief prosecutors had requested details on the background of the appeal withdrawal decision from Noman-seok, who was the Acting Prosecutor General.
Following Chief Prosecutor Park, it has been confirmed that Song Kang, the chief prosecutor of the Gwangju High Prosecutors’ Office, has also expressed his intention to resign.
Chief Prosecutor Song did not release a separate statement to the media or the internal prosecutor network following the appeal withdrawal controversy. However, it is reported that he separately conveyed his opinion to former Acting Prosecutor General No last week, stating that “failing to properly explain the reasons for the appeal withdrawal will only fuel suspicion.”
Neither of them clarified the specific reasons for their resignation, but it seems the discussion of disciplinary actions, such as transferring chief prosecutors to lower roles, which is being brought up by the government and the ruling party, may have influenced their decisions.
Minister of Justice Jeong Seong-ho, on his way to work this morning, stated only, “I will consider good ways to stabilize the prosecution,” without mentioning any specifics about disciplinary actions. As the political sphere is mentioning even audits, it remains to be seen whether this will lead to further resignations among senior prosecutors.
This has been reported from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office.
