“Refusing to Resign Alone” Han Dong-hoon… “The Authority to Appoint the Emergency Committee Chairman Lies with the Party Leader”

Following the impeachment vote against President Yoon Suk-yeol, the entire elected Supreme Council of the People Power Party has resigned, leading to the collapse of the Han Dong-hoon leadership just five months after its establishment. The party is expected to transition back to an emergency response committee, amid escalating internal conflicts over the appointment of a new committee chairman.

After internal discussions on the 15th, the People Power Party is likely to officially begin the transition process to an emergency committee on the 16th. This follows the leadership’s collective resignation decision made during a general meeting of lawmakers immediately after the impeachment vote on the 14th. Supreme Council members Kim Min-jeon, In Yo-han, Jang Dong-hyuk, and Jin Jong-oh expressed their intention to resign during the meeting, and Kim Jae-won also announced his intention to step down afterward. Consequently, the Han Dong-hoon leadership, which began in July this year, has come to an end.

Han Dong-hoon’s side has argued that even if the party transitions to an emergency committee due to the collective resignation of the Supreme Council members, the authority to appoint the emergency committee chairman remains with the party leader. According to a key party official, “Even if the switch to an emergency committee occurs, the party leader resigns only after all emergency committee members are appointed. The party leader can appoint the emergency committee chairman through the approval of the national committee,” referencing party regulations that stipulate the leader and Supreme Council lose their positions and authority upon the committee’s establishment.

The official also noted that according to party regulations, the floor leader and policy committee chair are automatic members of the emergency committee, which means that Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader, cannot concurrently serve as the emergency committee chairman.

Amid the current situation with the approved impeachment of the president, the People Power Party appears poised to engage in intense power struggles rather than reflecting on the outcome.
