President Yoon Suk-yeol announced that South Korea would provide new humanitarian aid worth $10 million by the end of the year to address the food crisis in Africa. During the first session of the G20 Summit held in Brazil on the 18th local time, President Yoon pledged to tackle global hunger and poverty, stating that food aid through the United Nations World Food Programme will be increased by 50% to 150,000 tons next year.
He further emphasized that the fundamental solution to hunger and poverty is the economic growth of developing countries, which can be achieved stably only with the firm maintenance of a rules-based order.
President Yoon also expressed concern over North Korea’s large-scale dispatch of troops to Russia, indicating that the Ukraine war is entering a critical phase. He urged the immediate cessation of illegal military cooperation and appealed to G20 leaders for unity.
South Korea has joined as a founding member of the G20’s “Global Hunger and Poverty Eradication Alliance,” which was launched today.
