“Outstanding Design and Safety Features: ‘KGM Actyon’ [Test Drive Review]”

KG Mobility (KGM) has introduced yet another hit following the Torres, with the launch of the coupe-style SUV “Actyon.” The Actyon garnered significant interest, recording the highest number of pre-orders in the company’s history. We took the Actyon for a test drive to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.

First launched in 2005 when KGM was known as SsangYong Motor, the Actyon was reintroduced with a design inspired by the traditional Korean pattern known as “Geongongamni.”

The new Actyon features a bold front with strong character lines on the hood and full LED headlights, incorporating geometric patterns and vertical indents for a dynamic, stylish appearance. Its side profile accentuates the sleek coupe roofline with black accents enhancing its sharp image. The vehicle’s dimensions are 4740 mm in length, 1910 mm in width, 1680 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2680 mm.

At the rear, the Actyon is equipped with an integrated skid plate bumper and a pin-tail aero spoiler, emphasizing the coupe aesthetic. Horizontal LED positioning lamps with “ACTYON” lettering add to its distinct rear styling.

Inside, the Actyon boasts a generous 668-liter cargo space, expandable to 1568 liters with the second row folded. The interior is equipped with a panoramic display, combining a 12.3-inch cluster with a 12.3-inch AVNT infotainment system, enhancing visibility. However, the removal of physical buttons for climate control in favor of touchscreen operations may pose a distraction during driving.

The cabin includes a sporty two-spoke double D-cut steering wheel and a crystal toggle-type electronic gear shift. The interior provides ample space with a headroom of 1001 mm in the second row and a thoughtfully designed center console offering separated space for cup holders and additional storage.

Advanced safety and convenience features include a 3D around-view monitoring system using four cameras for better parking and maneuvering assistance, and a comprehensive suite of driver assist technologies. These include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Vehicle Start Warning (FVSW), Safe Distance Warning (SDW), and Smart High Beam (SHB).

The Actyon’s performance comes from an eco-friendly 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine paired with a 3rd generation Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission, delivering a maximum torque of 28.6 kg·m and 170 horsepower. While initial acceleration may be lacking, the high-speed ride remains stable and comfortable, aided by sound-deadening materials and a quiet cabin.

The 4WD system adjusts power distribution according to driving conditions, optimizing efficiency in normal driving and providing added control when necessary. Nevertheless, the absence of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remains a downside, although offset by the vehicle’s comprehensive driver assistance systems.

The Actyon’s price is competitive, with the S7 trim priced at 33.95 million KRW and the S9 trim at 36.49 million KRW. Despite some drawbacks, the Actyon offers attractive design and advanced safety features at a reasonable price point.
