NYT “Trump Administration Pressures Cuba with ‘Negotiations Only Possible if President Steps Down'”

Reports have emerged that the Donald Trump administration pressured Cuba, which is experiencing an energy crisis due to a U.S. blockade, by stating that the issue could only be resolved if the Cuban president steps down.

The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 16th local time, citing multiple sources familiar with the U.S.-Cuba dialogue, that the Trump administration set the resignation of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel as a condition for advancing negotiations.

Additionally, it was reported that the U.S. demanded the resignation of some high-ranking officials who adhere to the ideology of Fidel Castro, who led the socialist revolution, and called for the release of political prisoners.

However, the sources reported that no demands were made regarding the Castro family, which still wields significant power in Cuba.

The New York Times analyzed that such demands from the U.S. are consistent with the Trump administration’s foreign policy approach, which has been more about enforcing compliance than regime change, by ousting symbolic figures while allowing the communist regime to remain.

In Venezuela, the U.S. ousted President Nicolás Maduro but permitted Delcy Rodríguez, who was the vice president, to assume the interim presidency.
