NHRCK: “Hate speech undermines democracy… The government and political circles should take the lead.”

On the occasion of the “International Day Against Hate Speech,” observed on June 18, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) has urged the government and political sectors to actively respond to hate speech. In a statement, Chairman Ahn Chang-ho emphasized that hate speech undermines the fundamental values of democracy by fostering prejudice and discrimination against specific groups or individuals.

The United Nations designated June 18 as the International Day Against Hate Speech in 2021, highlighting the need for a coordinated global response to hate speech. Chairman Ahn pointed out that Korean society has experienced hate speech following past disasters, tragedies, and various incidents. He noted that the recent presidential election period saw an increase in discrimination and violence incited by hate speech amid intense political and social conflicts.

Ahn stressed that public office candidates and politicians, due to their public exposure and influence, have a particular responsibility to guard against discrimination and hate and to confront hate speech. He called for government and political leaders to take the lead in developing and implementing policies and systems to counter hate speech.

Furthermore, Ahn urged all societal members, including individuals, businesses, and civil society, to respond decisively to hate speech and recognize that anyone can become a victim of it. The NHRCK plans to continue its efforts by monitoring the state of hate speech, educating to raise awareness, and promoting related activities.
