Minjoo Party’s Lee Eon-joo says, “Voting rights even with just one month’s party membership fee? …It could potentially cause distrust.”

The Democratic Party of Korea is set to hold a vote among its members on constitutional and regulatory amendments meant to significantly increase the reflection of ordinary party members’ opinions in the election of party leadership and candidate nominations for local elections, beginning the day after tomorrow (19th). Concerns have been raised about the decision to restrict voting rights to those who have paid party dues in October of this year.

On the 17th, Supreme Council member Lee Eon-ju expressed support for the principle of actively incorporating party members’ opinions into party policies while voicing concerns on social media that the sudden change in criteria could lead to distrust in the party leadership.

She further highlighted her concerns that limiting voting rights to those who have only paid dues in October is worrying. Traditionally, party member voting rights were granted to those who had paid dues for at least six months.

Lee added that since changing the criteria for party member voting does not require any special procedures, there remains the possibility of extending the right to vote to members who have paid dues for more than six months. She urged the party leader to consider this matter carefully.
