Sungshin Women’s University professor Seo Kyung-duk and broadcaster Lee Soo-ji have released a four-minute multilingual video introducing the Dokdo island plant, Sedum Takesimense. According to Professor Seo, the video was co-produced with the Gyeongbuk Cultural Foundation Content Promotion Agency and is available in both Korean and English.
The main content of the video highlights that there are 56 plant species native to Dokdo, with a special focus on the Sedum Takesimense, which is only found on Ulleungdo and Dokdo islands. It also points out that during the Japanese occupation 100 years ago, Japan registered the scientific names of Dokdo’s native plants using Japanese names to secure research rights, emphasizing the need to reclaim these names.
Professor Seo, who planned the video, stated, “This is the fourth video in a series following those about Dokdo’s sea lions, Sapsal dogs, and Dokdo shrimp. I want to widely promote the representative flora and fauna of Dokdo both domestically and internationally.” He added that the video is being spread not only on YouTube but also across various social media platforms and shared with major Korean and international student communities worldwide.
Narrator Lee Soo-ji expressed, “I’m delighted to introduce Dokdo’s native plants and hope that many viewers, both in Korea and abroad, will watch the video.”
