Lee Kyung-sil’s egg business has become embroiled in controversy over the egg’s shell number and price. On November 16th, Cho Hye-ryun promoted Lee Kyung-sil’s egg business on her social media, using phrases like “different packaging,” “sturdy Woaran,” “different quality,” and “harmony of yellow and white.”
However, the promotional images revealed that the egg product has a shell number of ‘4,’ which has intensified the controversy. The egg shell number indicates the farming environment, with ‘1’ being free-range, ‘2’ for barn, ‘3’ for improved cage, and ‘4’ for battery cage.
While first-grade eggs come from the best farming conditions, Lee Kyung-sil’s “Woaran” is rated ‘4,’ the lowest grade. Typically, eggs with shell number 4 are sold cheaper than those with other shell numbers.
Despite this, Lee Kyung-sil’s “Woaran” is priced at 15,000 won for 30 eggs, comparable to or more expensive than first-grade eggs, drawing criticism from netizens. As egg shell numbers are directly tied to pricing, there is criticism that the celebrity is leveraging their fame for profit.
