The first trial verdict for Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, regarding his alleged ‘subornation of perjury’ will be announced today.

Similar to the first trial verdict concerning a violation of the Public Official Election Act on the 15th, demonstrations both in support and against Lee, involving thousands of participants, are scheduled around the court.

Today marks the second first trial verdict out of five trials for leader Lee Jae-myung.

This involves the so-called ‘subornation of perjury’ case.

Lee was indicted for allegedly claiming innocence during a past “prosecutor impersonation” incident when he was a candidate for Governor of Gyeonggi Province in 2018. During the trial, he is accused of asking witness Kim Jin-sung to provide false testimony.

[Lee Jae-myung – Kim Jin-sung / December 24, 2018: “It’s not about reconstructing the events of that time. (I came forward for the election. I don’t know who internally connected with KBS) Just say you heard something like that.”]

During the closing argument in September, prosecutors requested a three-year prison sentence, claiming he coached perjury to cover up lies. However, Lee denies these accusations, asserting that he only asked for the truth to be told.

Today’s verdict, like the first trial for violating the Public Official Election Act on the 15th, will not be broadcasted live, making real-time viewing impossible.

In the previous verdict on the 15th, Lee received a sentence disqualifying him from holding office, and now, within ten days, he faces another judicial trial.

Protests supporting Lee’s innocence and demanding a stern punishment for him are planned around the court today.

The court has restricted general vehicle access to the building and has heightened security measures in preparation for any unforeseen incidents.
