KT has made the ‘Metropolitan Living Mobility Data’ available on the Seoul Open Data Plaza.

The Nation’s First Mobility Data…Expectations for Policy Innovation
Automatic Identification of 8 Modes of Transportation such as Subway, Bus, Walking, etc.
Enhanced Policy Implementation through Data-Based Solutions for Traffic Congestion

[Herald Economy=Cha Min-ju] KT announced on the 3rd that it will release the ‘Metropolitan Area Mobility Data’ on the Seoul Open Data Plaza, which can analyze the movement patterns of citizens in the metropolitan area.

This data is the only mobility data in Korea that automatically identifies eight modes of transportation, including airplane, train, express bus, subway, bus, vehicle, and walking, through communication-based algorithms. Combined with the ‘Mobility Purpose Data’ released last year, it has established the nation’s first system capable of integratively analyzing the purpose and means of movement. KT expects this data to be utilized across various administrative aspects, from transportation policy to urban planning.

KT classified citizens’ transportation modes by comprehensively analyzing factors such as travel time and distance based on communication information, conformity with subway and bus routes, and visits to stations, stops, airports, and terminals. This enables a high-resolution understanding of actual movement patterns across the entire metropolitan area in 250m grid units.

KT anticipates that the precision of transportation policies in the metropolitan area will significantly increase with the release of this data. The data features the ability to analyze movement flows from Gyeonggi and Incheon to Seoul and allows comparison of average travel time and distance by transportation mode. This, according to KT, enables traffic policy formulation, such as identifying traffic congestion and bottlenecks, establishing transfer centers, and readjusting routes.

Furthermore, KT emphasizes that with this data, which combines mobility purpose data and transportation mode data, an integrated administrative framework from policy design to execution and post-evaluation has been established. This allows the government to redesign urban space and housing policies based on data. For example, it can derive directions to improve access to medical and welfare facilities in regions with a high dependency on cars among the elderly, or consider residential and transit-oriented development in areas with high subway usage by young people.

Additionally, KT explained that this data can be used to select the location of life infrastructure facilities like hospitals, schools, and shopping centers based on actual demand, and quantitatively assess policy effects through analyzing changes in mobility before and after policy implementation.

From today, the Metropolitan Area Mobility Data will be available on the Seoul Open Data Plaza on a monthly and daily basis. It plans to provide information such as the origin and destination administrative districts, time-specific transportation modes, gender and age-specific moving population, travel distance, and travel time.

Kim Young-geol, Head of KT’s Service Product Division, stated, “The data combining mobility purpose and modes is the nation’s first comprehensive mobility data that realistically reflects the entire process of citizens’ daily movements in the metropolitan area,” and added, “We will contribute to the advancement of policies directly related to the livelihoods of citizens, such as transportation, housing, and urban planning, by strengthening cooperation with the government, Seoul, and local governments.”
