Korea Kolmar Develops World’s First Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Sunscreen

Korea Kolmar announced on the 24th that it has successfully developed a ‘complex sunscreen stabilization technology’ that perfectly combines inorganic and organic sunscreen ingredients. Korea Kolmar stated on the 24th that it developed the ‘UV-DUO PLUS’ technology, which stabilizes a composite material combining organic sunscreen (organic filter) and inorganic sunscreen (inorganic filter) ingredients within a sunscreen formulation.

Sunscreens are categorized into organic and inorganic based on their UV protection method. Organic filters convert absorbed UV radiation into heat energy and emit it, resulting in less white cast and better spreadability on the skin. Inorganic filters reflect UV rays on the skin’s surface, offering excellent UV protection while being gentle on the skin, though they tend to cause a white cast.

Although mixed sunscreens applying both mechanisms have been developed, combining the ingredients resulted in the organic filter components aggregating with the oil components in the formulation. This technical limitation created spaces that allowed UV penetration when applied to the skin, preventing the sunscreen components from enclosing the skin tightly.

To resolve this ingredient aggregation issue, Korea Kolmar introduced a new composite material where the inorganic filter components are coated or surrounded by the organic filter components, and developed the UV-DUO PLUS technology to evenly disperse this material in the formulation.

To capture the new market for complex sunscreens, Korea Kolmar has completed patent registration for ‘a composition for UV protection cosmetics comprising an organic-inorganic composite UV-blocking substance.’

By applying UV-DUO PLUS technology, they confirmed the efficacy of a sunscreen with SPF 50+ PA++++ and received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as an anti-UV functional cosmetic. Furthermore, they are pursuing international patent applications (PCT) to target overseas markets.

A representative from Korea Kolmar stated, “Although mixed sunscreens that simply blend the two components are sold in the market, there are no complex sunscreens that perfectly combine organic and inorganic components,” and added, “through the UV-DUO PLUS technology, we plan to develop various sun care products to expand our reach not only in the domestic market but also globally.”
