Party Spokesperson: “No Prior Discussion…Personal Opinion”
Call for ‘Fundamental Measures’ Focused on Pro-Yoon Faction
On the 21st, Supreme Council member Kim Min-jun of the People Power Party urged Han Dong-hoon, the party’s leader, to propose accepting a special prosecutor for First Lady Kim Keon-hee during a meeting with President Yoon Suk-yeol and suggested an investigation into former first ladies Kim Jung-sook and Kim Hye-gyeong as well.
Ahead of the planned afternoon meeting between President Yoon and Han Dong-hoon on October 21, several proposals were reportedly discussed among the People Power Party leadership. Kim Min-jun requested Han to propose the acceptance of a special prosecutor for Kim Keon-hee, while suggesting the same should be done for Kim Jung-sook and Kim Hye-gyeong.
Kim, known for his alignment with President Yoon (pro-Yoon group), stated during the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, “There’s a conversation between President Yoon and Han today, and the opposition is making various comments like ‘Han Dong-hoon can survive only if Kim Keon-hee falls’ or vice versa.”
Kim further mentioned that during the national audit, Central District Prosecutor Lee Chang-soo seemed confident, claiming that indicting Kim would be more politically motivated. He also referred to lawmaker Lee Seong-yoon, who claimed to have left 24,000 pages of investigation records. “If that’s the case, what is there to fear?” he questioned.
He continued, “Instead, we can use the permanent special prosecutor law, which allows the Minister of Justice to initiate a special investigation,” citing allegations such as the corporate card use by Lee Jae-myung’s spouse, Kim Hye-gyeong, and former President Moon Jae-in’s spouse Kim Jung-sook’s visit to the Taj Mahal. “I’d like to request the implementation of special investigations for all three first ladies,” he emphasized.
However, Chief Spokesperson Kwak Kyu-taek of the People Power Party clarified after the meeting with reporters, stating that Kim’s remarks were “a matter not previously discussed” and were “understood to be his personal opinion.”
Voices calling for fundamental measures regarding Kim Keon-hee’s controversies also emerged.
Supreme Council member Kim Jong-hyuk, identified with the pro-Han Dong-hoon faction, mentioned the Democratic Party’s planned outdoor rally against Kim Keon-hee on November 2, arguing, “The Democratic Party can commit such atrocities because they are using her as a front.” He urged for fundamental measures to be discussed during the meeting to confidently counter the Democratic Party’s anti-democratic acts.
Another pro-Han Dong-hoon member, Supreme Council member Jang Dong-hyuk, expressed hope for significant achievements from the meeting between the President and Han. It is interpreted as urging President Yoon to accept previous demands made by Han, such as suspending Kim’s activities, personnel reshuffle around her, and cooperation with investigation efforts.
